INDIANAPOLIS – The tweaking of Shane Steichen’s coaching staff continues.

The Indianapolis Colts are hiring Alex Tanney as their passing game coordinator and Justin Hamilton as assistant defensive backs coach, according to multiple reports. ESPN was first to report the reuniting of Tanney and Steichen.

Tanney, 36, spent the past three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was quarterbacks coach last season after working alongside then-coordinator Steichen for the previous two.

Tanney was an offensive quality control assistant in 2021, his first year as a coach. In ’22, he was an offensive assistant.

After working with Eagles’ quarterback Jalen Hurts, Tanney will turn his attention to Anthony Richardson and collaborate with Steichen, offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter and quarterbacks coach Cam Turner.

Before transitioning to the coaching ranks, Tanney saw limited exposure as an NFL quarterback. His nine-year career consisted of just two games and 15 passing attempts for the Tennessee Titans and New York Giants, and included a brief stint on the Colts’ practice squad in 2015.

In the ’15 season finale against the Colts, Tanney replaced an injured Zach Mettenberger and completed 10-of-14 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown in the Titans’ 30-24 loss.

Hamilton was with the Titans last season as a defensive quality control coach.

Previously, the Colts hired long-time Pitt defensive line coach Charlie Partridge to a similar position.
