BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Malik Reneau will stick around for another season in Bloomington.

IU’s second-leading scorer made the announcement on the Hoosier Hysterics podcast. The 6’9” forward averaged 15.4 points and 6 rebounds per game during his sophomore season.

A staple in IU’s frontcourt, Reneau was an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection as voted by coaches and the media.

A couple familiar faces also elected to remain in Bloomington. Earlier this month, seniors Trey Galloway and Anthony Leal announced they would stay for their extra year of eligibility.

3 players to transfer

As is the case in today’s college basketball landscape, a few IU players will seek greener pastures by entering the transfer portal.

CJ Gunn, Kaleb Banks and Payton Sparks plan to transfer, according to multiple reports. All three primarily came off the bench.

Gunn averaged 3.9 points and 1 rebound per game during the 2023-2024 season. The Lawrence North product played just under 13 minutes per contest. He appeared in 29 games.

Banks rarely played toward the end of the season. The forward appeared in 21 games during his sophomore year, averaging 10.7 minutes per contest.

Sparks, a transfer from Ball State, had trouble finding playing time behind Reneau and Kel’el Ware. The Winchester native averaged 2.1 points, 1.8 rebounds and 7.4 minutes per game at IU. He appeared in 24 games.

Roster outlook

Other departures for the Hoosiers include Xavier Johnson and Anthony Walker; both players were recognized at Senior Day and have no remaining NCAA eligibility.

IU fans are awaiting a decision from Kel’el Ware, a Third Team All-Big Ten selection who could elect to move on to the NBA draft. The Hoosiers currently have six open scholarships and are keeping a close eye on the transfer portal.

After losing to Nebraska in the Big Ten Tournament, IU declined an invitation to the NIT to focus on recruiting and building the roster for next season.
