Update (05/24/2024): The weather advisory at IMS was lifted at 6:37 p.m.
INDIANAPOLIS — Rain and lightning put a damper on the end of Carb Day on Friday.
In a post on X, officials with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway asked fans participating in Carb Day festivities to exit the grandstands in an orderly fashion and seek shelter just after 5:50 p.m. The warning was issued after lightning was detected near IMS.
IMS personnel also encouraged patrons to "implement (their) personal safety plan." Friday's schedule of events, which was posted on the official IMS website, projected Carb Day concerts to end at 5:30 p.m.
No additional information on the weather advisory was provided by IMS officials. According to FOX59 Chief Meteorologist Brian Wilkes, severe thunderstorm warnings for Boone, Clinton, Howard, Hamilton, Carroll and Tippecanoe Counties began to roll in around 5:30 p.m.
Those warnings will remain in effect until 6 p.m.
