Attendance record set Wednesday at swim trials

INDIANAPOLIS – Records fell Wednesday during the U.S. Olympic Team Trials at Lucas Oil Stadium.

A record crowd watched eleven athletes punch their tickets to Paris. According to organizers, 22,209 people attended Wednesday’s events, topping a record set on the first day of the event.

New Jersey native and University of Pennsylvania swimmer Matt Fallon broke the U.S. record in the men’s 200-meter breaststroke, posting a time of 2:06:54 and topping Indiana University’s Josh Matheny by a comfortable margin.

Notre Dame swimmer Chris Guiliano won the 100-meter freestyle to earn a spot in the Olympics.

Also of note on Wednesday: 17-year-old Thomas Heilman became the youngest male U.S. swimmer on the Olympics roster since Michael Phelps accomplished the feat in 2000 at the age of 15. Heilman won the men’s 200-meter butterfly.

Here are the eleven swimmers who secured spots on Wednesday:

  • Kate Douglass (Pelham, N.Y./ New York Athletic Club)
  • Caeleb Dressel (Green Cove Springs, Fla./Gator Swim Club)
  • Matt Fallon (Warren, N.J./University of Pennsylvania)
  • Chris Guiliano (Douglassville, Pa./University of Notre Dame)
  • Thomas Heilman (Crozet, Va./Cavalier Aquatics/Piedmont Family YMCA)
  • Torri Huske (Arlington, Va./Arlington Aquatic Club)
  • Katie Ledecky (Bethesda, Md./Gator Swim Club)
  • Gretchen Walsh (Nashville, Tenn./University of Virginia)
  • Simone Manuel (Sugar Land, Texas/Sun Devil Swimming)

Six Hoosiers previously claimed spots in U.S. swimming’s premier event: Drew Kibler, Aaron Shackell, Alex Shackell (all from Carmel); Lilly King (Evansville); Blake Pieroni (Chesteron); and Luke Whitlock (Noblesville).

Thursday’s events at Lucas Oil Stadium include the women’s 200-meter butterfly final, men’s 200-meter backstroke final, men’s 50-meter freestyle semifinal, women’s 200-meter breaststroke final, women’s 200-meter backstroke semifinal, and men’s 200-meter individual medley final.

Prelims begin at 11 a.m., with finals set for 8 p.m. The trials continue through Sunday, June 23.
