BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana basketball fans were forced to evacuate Tuesday night's game versus Wisconsin at Assembly Hall with the sides level on 54 points with 10:06 remaining in the game.
IU Basketball said in an update posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the game was briefly delayed "due to the fire alarms going off inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall."
"The game has been delayed due to the fire alarms going off inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Please evacuate if you are inside the building. We will provide further updates when available," IU Basketball said.
The Indiana University Police Department said the mass evacuation was triggered by the activation of a fire alarm. The Bloomington Fire Department arrived at the scene and found that a smoke detector had been activated near an elevator in the hall, IUPD confirmed.
The game resumed after a delay that lasted around 20 minutes and the all-clear was issued by authorities at 8:32 p.m. The game ended with a 74-70 victory for IU.
Jeff Keag, associate athletic director for Strategic Communications and Media for Indiana University Athletics, added that emergency management officials adhered to state law when they evacuated attendees.
"It was determined a fire alarm went off in the balcony. Emergency management officials stationed in the Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall Command Center followed state law and evacuated the arena for the safety and well-being of everyone in attendance," Keag said. "Once it was determined there was no immediate threat, everyone was allowed back in the building."
The cause of the activation remains under investigation.
